Find the best GPS system is like buying the perfect car. It's all relative – you! The perfect car for me should be able to survive turbulent two children, a dog, sometimes two cats and a woman who is always up junk (Oh, excuse me, they are called collectibles) on side of the road. It should be spacious and maintenance free. For someone else, the perfect car would need only two seats, a cloth top, and be able to do 120 mph easily.
To find the best GPS system, you must first understand what they do in general and what are the usual features, then define what you want to do.
For GPS systems, I speak specifically of post-variety Car Market. You know, like you see people perched on windshields at the grocery store. I am not talking about dashboard kind that come with certain cars, I am not given the main varieties that you would take a long hike. The system of post-market are generally called GPS receivers or systems, and that's what I'll call them here.
Basically, these GPS receivers are exactly the same thing. They show you where you are on an electronic map, and they will tell you how to get where you want to go, whether in the street or across the country.
All GPS systems work off the same network of satellites that surround the earth, and most laptops even use the same receptor types. Thus, the differences between brands and models are not in the way they work or what they do, basically, but the bells and whistles that come with them.
Virtually all GPS systems come with the following:
* Voice prompts tell you Who to contact
* Touch Screen
* Large database of "Points of Interest" (locations of hospitals, distributors Automated teller machines, McDonalds, etc.)
* Choice between 2D "map view" and 3D Eye "flies" views
* Route Calculation Automatic
* Choice of routes shorter and faster
* Come with preloaded maps of 48 states
The main characteristics option to consider when purchasing a GPS system are the following:
* She says the real name of the street needed to activate as you approach it?
* Do you need a big screen version (4.3 inches diagonally against 3.5 inches)?
* Need maps of Canada, Mexico and / or Europe?
* Is support for Bluetooth, which lets you use your GPS system conjunction with your cell phone to make hands free calls? (This is essentially a windshield mounted version of these people little ear clips stroll with.)

There are some Other features that major manufacturers include. Magellan, for example, is connected to AAA to provide their information Tourguide actually on the GPS itself. Tom Tom has this feature clean enough where users can map changes and download them to computer database that Tom Tom makes available to everyone. And Garmin comes out with a new unit in 2008, who will learn to recognize your voice so you can enter commands by speaking instead of tap the touchscreen.
Thus, to find the best GPS for you, you must first decide which of these optional features are necessary, and would like if you can afford.
You can get a basic GPS system for under $ 200. The Garmin nuvi 200, for example, has all the basic features I listed above. It comes preloaded with regional maps (not all U.S.). If you want to spend a little more, how about the Tom Tom One, 3rd edition, which at the time of this writing (early '08) cost slightly less than $ 200 at Amazon and comes with a capacity in real-time traffic and MapShare Tom Tom (which you can change downloaded).
Almost all of the Magellan Maestro series is currently in the range of $ 200 to $ 400. You can get more basic 3210 for about $ 250 which has millions of points of interest and, of course, Tourbook AAA, or you can spend about $ 100 more and get the 4250, which includes everything The 3210 is added and a Bluetooth function, voice recognition and real-time traffic.
One of the most popular units is the Garmin nuvi 350 what does all the nuvi 200 does, but includes Garmin's "Travel Kit", MP3 playback, picture viewer, world travel clock, calendar and more yet.
Deciding can be difficult, but do not put buy one, though! GPS systems are great. Once you have your first, you you'll wonder how in the world got along without it.
