I was in Japan, and saw this great traffic service on my host’s GPS, showing color-coded where the tie-ups were and how to avoid, and I thought what a great concept for traffic in a crowded area. But I was told there they have GPS signals coming from the cars to the service, a locational approach that might seem a bit instrusive in the U.S. (i.e. the service is tracking your location?) But I see there are such traffic services for GPS in the U.S. – how do they work? Do you recommend one?
GPS traffic reports very by location. A lot of the time they work with the traffic companies that have systems set up to be able to do something like that. Here in Los Angelos since it is very busy and there is a huge network for GPS traffic reports. Chances are if you don’t have the ability to look up traffic on the internet before going out, you will not be likely to find a GPS unit to do it for you.
In other locations where there is not much traffic, you will not find that type of service. Usually for traffic updates there is an additional fee per month that needs to be paid.
